In the past two decades an extractive model was spread throughout the Americas as the hegemonic paradigm of primary production. The concentration of the various stages of production and profits in the hands of transnational companies, the capitalintensive approach, and the artificial acceleration of the processes of appropriation and degradation of nature are some of the central features of this model. In the province of Corrientes, the traditional rice production has suffered in recent years, a sudden change of technological and productive processes. This paper tries to account for these changes and to verify its extractive properties. It also aims to make a first approach to the social context in which these changes occur, relieving the positions taken by different social actors involved. The present study includes surveys to the producers, their corporations, the provincial government, as well as the civil organizations involved in this issue. This approach is useful to contrast the specific characteristics of the extractive rice production, its hazardousness and boundaries, and also to validate the general criticism of the new models of widespread looting in the region.
